How I Got Over My Money Fears
Money fears are something some of us know we have, and others don’t. For me I had no idea!
If you are like I was, you're probably thinking to yourself... What even ARE money fears???
Whilst your version of money fears might be different to mine - I'm hoping that by sharing my story, it might:
a) shed some light on what money fears are - so you can see if these fears are holding you back in any way;
b) how to clear those fears so you can move on to achieving everything you want in your life!!!
My Money Fear Story
It was my first business event, staying in a house with others creating a doTerra business that I first discovered 'money fears' were even a thing.
I still remember the scene like a photo image in my brain. I remember exactly who was there, where we were standing and what was said, all so clearly.
That moment made a huge impact on my life and the self development journey that followed allowed me to see what was going on inside my head - all my negative thoughts, beliefs and fears about money that had culminated over the years. Most of which, I hadn't even realised were having an effect, or didn't even realise I had been thinking (and clutching to).
What Does A Money Fear Look (& Sound) Like?
While I don't hold any formal qualification to talk about Money Fearst - but what I can tell you is my story; what it looked like for me and the blocks and boundaries that I had put upon myself and most importantly how I got over my money fears. For as long as I remember, I had believed (and been told) that it was ok not to have a lot of money - as long as we had our family and our health, that's what was most important. That didn’t come from not having a hard working family - because they were! I guess we'd just collectively experienced a lot of bad luck or maybe their own money stories had held taught them it was okay to not have a lot of money, and that's what was reiterated throughout our family culture. Right?! Possibly!
Perhaps you can relate? What things are said about money in your family? Next time you catch yourself having a conversation about money with a family member, partner or even your children, take a moment to check-in, asking yourself...
Is this money conversation built from fear or faith? No doubt you'll uncover some hidden money stories you've unintentionally been carrying around that may not truly be your own.
Releasing My Money Fears - One Tap at a Time
Once I realised I'd been holding onto some fears around money, that weren't serving my highest good and the highest good of my family, I went on the search for some tools to help me move on from them and change my story moving forward.
One of the first tools I tried was something called TAPPING or EFT, which stands for Emotional Freedom Technique.
This technique that has been used for a very long time to release all sorts of negative beliefs. According to Gary Craig, the developer of EFT, tapping on different parts of the body helps balance energy and reduce physical and emotional pain. People can see an EFT practitioner for treatment or treat themselves using this technique. To be honest, my first response was of disbelief - I wasn't sure how simply tapping on different body parts was meant to help me overcome my money fears, but I was willing to try and see what happens. I opened my laptop, and headed straight to Youtube, where I soon learned about Brad Yates. If you haven’t googled him yet, you will! I started with a 30-day challenge to complete 1 tapping video everyday.
Each video only went for a few minutes but I was totally dedicated to trying them out.
Following my intuition on what my gut was telling me I needed on the day, I sat down, day-by-day and started to shift some beliefs. I could feel it, I was beginning to re-write my money story.
But then... (dum, dum, dum) I could still feel my disbeliefs creep back in when my previous money stories and fears were triggered.
Like when my business hit a 6-figure income rank, only 2 weeks later and our entire family got sick with a virus that lasted weeks.
I started to think all over again that maybe money really did mean bad things.
But thats just rubbish! I can hear you screaming at me through the screen.
But at the time it felt real and true, and I was scared and a little unsure that I could really believe anything different.
What Good is Money Anyway?
I wasn't prepared to give up on releasing those money fears and creating abundance in my family, just yet!
So I took some more dedicated action!
I wanted to remind myself daily what good money can do and that it's not a 'source of evil';that money in the right hands is way more powerful than money in the wrong hands.
Along with continuing EFT, each day, I would write down what good money is currently bringing to my life and can possibly bring. I also started writing down the names of all the people I knew who had money and didn’t have bad things happening.
I discovered that money really was doing good in my life and community and that having more money meant I could donate more often to more places and that are aligned with my core values.
To help retrain my thoughts (and switch out those negative fear-based money convos I was having internally on the daily), I started using positive affirmations about money, such as:
Money is good
Money is helpful Money pays our bills Money allows freedom Money does not mean bad
Money does not mean dirty
Money is not shameful Money is amazing
Money feels good
Woah! Money must be feeling pretty good about themselves right now after all that positivity!!!
Then I was also surrendered it over to the universe, allowing it to send all the goodness money had to offer, my way.
Beliefs About Money, Or Belief In Myself?
The next stage I discovered was realising that my beliefs about money were connected to the belief I had in myself. I really had to dig deep to change my previous beliefs about money, and create some new ones. Here's just a few beliefs that I now hold:
The belief that I was worthy of money.
The belief that I deserved money.
The belief that things could be easier for my family.
The belief that I didn't have to work ridiculous hours a day and still not earn what I felt it was worth.
Using Essential Oils to Support My Journey
To support my journey through all of this I used one of my favourite physical tools - essential oils, of course! Through my tapping sessions, I was diffusing my oils. Through journalling, I used oils on my feet, neck and body. Slowly through all the unravelling of deep-seated mindset and beliefs, I was able to release my fears about money.
